1. Deny / Refuse
Deny แปลว่า ปฏิเสธบางอย่างที่มันไม่จริง หรือปฏิเสธว่าคุณไม่ได้กระทำอะไรใดๆ
วิธีการใช้:Deny + Ving
ตัวอย่าง: He continues to deny that he needs help.
Refuse แปลว่า ปฏิเสธที่จะไม่ทำการใดๆ
วิธีการใช้:Refuse + to + V1
ตัวอย่าง: I offered him a cold drink but he refused it.
2. Staff / Employees
ทั้ง 2 คำ หมายถึงพนักงานบริษัท แต่ Staff จะเป็นคำนามเอกพจน์นับไม่ได้ บ่งบอกถึง “กลุ่มพนักงานทั้งหมด”
ส่วน Employees จะเป็นคำนามพหูจน์นับได้ บ่งบอกถึงกลุ่มพนักงานรายบุคคล ถ้าหากระบุจำนวน ให้ใช้ employess หรือ staff members
ตัวอย่าง: There are forty employees/staff members in our company.
3. Interfere / Intervene
Interfere มีความหมายในเชิงลบ หมายถึง ก้าวก่าย ยุ่งวุ่นวาย เข้าไปยุ่งเรื่องคนอื่น
ตัวอย่าง:She tried not to interfere in her children’s lives.
Intervene มีความหมายในเชิงบวกมากกว่า หมายถึง เข้าไปเกี่ยวข้องในเรื่องของคนอื่น
ตัวอย่าง:He acted outside his authority when he intervened in the dispute.
4. Problem / Trouble
Trouble เป็นคำนามที่นับไม่ได้ แปลว่า ความเดือดร้อนจากเหตุการณ์ที่ไม่ดี แต่อาจจะไม่ใช่ปัญหาเสมอไป
ตัวอย่าง: I’m sorry to put you to all this trouble.
problem เป็นคำนามที่นับได้ แปลว่า ปัญหา, ข้อข้องใจ, ความสับสน ซึ่งเป็นปัญหาโดยตรง
ตัวอย่าง: Do you have any problems?
5. Relation / Relationship
ทั้ง 2 คำมีความหมายว่า ความสัมพันธ์
Relation แปลว่า ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกลุ่มคนหรือประเทศที่มีต่อกัน อีกความหมายนึงแปลว่า ญาติพี่น้อง
ตัวอย่าง:
1. Relations between (the leaders of) the two countries have never been closer.
2. I invited all my friends and relations to my twenty-first birthday party.
Relationship แปลว่า ความสัมพันธ์ใกล้ชิดระหว่างบุคคล 2 คนซึ่งมีความรู้สึกที่ดีต่อกันหรือความรักเข้ามาเกี่ยวข้อง ส่วนอีกความหมายนึงจะแปลว่า ความเชื่อมโยงต่อกัน
ตัวอย่าง: Doctors now believe that there may be some relationship / connection between autism and the MMR vaccine.
