University of Bristol

University of Bristol is one of the most popular and successful universities in the UK, ranked in the world’s top 65 in the QS World University Rankings 2022. The University was the first higher education institution in the UK to admit men and women on an equal basis. Bristol is at the cutting edge of global research. We have made innovations in areas ranging from cot death prevention to nanotechnology. The University is a chartered corporation and an exempt charity, whose legal status derives from a royal charter granted in 1909.

Sustainability is part of everything we do: our research, our curricula, our buildings and the student experience. We aim to equip our students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in their chosen career in a competitive global market.

The University has had a reputation for innovation since its founding in 1876. Our research tackles some of the world’s most pressing issues in areas as diverse as infection and immunity, human rights, climate change, and cryptography and information security. The University currently has 40 Fellows of the Royal Society and 13 of the British Academy – a remarkable achievement for a relatively small institution.

Our Future

We aim to bring together the best minds in individual fields, and encourage researchers from different disciplines and institutions to work together to find lasting solutions to society’s pressing problems. We are involved in numerous international research collaborations and integrate practical experience in our curriculum, so that students work on real-life projects in partnership with business, government and community sectors. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, which evaluates universities’ research, Bristol was once again confirmed as a world leader, with 83% of our research rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

A University of Bristol initiative which empowers our students to fulfil their academic and personal potential, to graduate from the University as tenaciousinventive and connected individuals who will be a benefit to themselves and to society. Bristol Futures is built around three themes which explore the major opportunities and challenges facing our generation:

  1. Innovation & Enterprise
  2. Global Citizenship
  3. Sustainable Futures

In addition to their degree programme, our students will be able to engage with these themes within a range of activities and learning resources supporting their studies and personal development.

Bristol has connections with hundreds of employers, from small businesses to global organisations, which means our courses are up to date and relevant.

Location

Bristol, England (UK)

Bristol is located in the south west of the United Kingdom about 100 miles west of London. Providing easy access to Bath, Cardiff and the beautiful surrounding countryside. South of the city, Somerset plays host to a wide range of attractions. Including Cheddar Gorge, Chew Valley, the Wookey Hole caves and the medieval city of Wells. The Mendip Hills are a recognised Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. To the north-east, the Cotswolds offer breathtaking rural landscapes, and nearby towns like Gloucester and Cheltenham are well worth a visit.

Bristol has been named the best place to live in Britain by the Sunday Times, which praises the city for being ‘cool, classy and supremely creative’. One of the reasons Bristol is so beloved by many is its focus on individuality – there are always new unique stores and eateries popping up and the city is home to the longest stretch of independent shops in the UK.
