Manhattan College

Manhattan College was founded in 1853 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a Catholic teaching order started by Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The Lasallian mission drives our focus on quality education for all and service to our neighbors in need.

Manhattan College was an unusual institution compared to its peer institutions at the time because it sought to combine broad learning in the traditional liberal arts with rigorous technical and pre-professional training. In 1973, the College became coeducational and accepted its first women undergraduate students. Over the years, it has seen many changes, and yet it maintains its deep commitment to its heritage and ideals. What was a predominantly Christian Brothers faculty has become predominantly lay, and includes a significant percentage of women, but the dedication of the faculty is unwavering.

Guided by history, faith and strong leadership, Manhattan continues to climb in national rankings as a top-valued school. The College empowers exceptional graduates who not only go on to lead successful careers, but also make a positive impact in the world. 75% of students participate in an internship or field-based experience. Companies include Google, NBC Universal, KPMG, Fox News, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Tesla, Met Life, Donna Karan, Con Edison and IBM.

Grounded in tradition, the transformative Jasper education is built on a strong liberal arts foundation and paired with hands-on, technical knowledge that evolves and adapts with our world. Our unique team name ‘Jasper’ comes from Brother Jasper of Mary, FSC, who served as the prefect of discipline in the 19th century. Br. Jasper brought the then little-known sport of baseball to Manhattan College, served as the team’s first coach and is credited in the Baseball Hall of Fame for creating the 7th inning stretch.

Manhattan College offers more than 100 programs in six distinct schools — a complexity not usually found in an institution with only 4,000 students. Manhattan College offers the variety of programming you might find at a large university, but with the personalized learning experience of a small, liberal arts school. Small classroom, big opportunity.

Location

The Bronx, New York (USA)

Manhattan picturesque campus is located in The Bronx, a 35-minute subway ride from the heart of Manhattan. Our beautiful campus offers a serene escape from city life with easy access to the culture and opportunities of midtown Manhattan.

So why is the College in the Bronx? Our campus was originally located in Manhattan at the intersection of 131st Street and Broadway. In 1923, Manhattan College moved to our present Riverdale location in order to accommodate a growing student body. But with more than 60 years of history established as Manhattan College, the institution decided to retain the name despite the geographic misnomer.

There’s no place like NYC and our students take full advantage of all that this city has to offer. More than half of students do an internship with many of these leading to full-time employment after graduation. You’ll have a distinct advantage when it comes to getting internships and jobs because of our access to New York City and the multitude of companies headquartered here. And many of our professors use New York City as a classroom with fields trips to sites such as Wall Street, the Museum of Natural History and the United Nations.
