Australia opening borders to international students from December 15

Recent updates on 29 November 2021, due to the emergence of the Omicron variant of concern, on 29 November 2021 the Australian Government announced the necessary and temporary decision to pause the reopening of Australia from 1 December 2021 until 15 December 2021.

According to an announcement made by Prime Minister Scott Morrison on November 29, Australia has announced the official re-opening border date for international students. The announcement states that students who have been fully vaccinated and hold eligible visa, will be able to enter Australia with the recent reopening date is 15 December 2021. Since the Australian Government announced the necessary and temporary decision to pause the entering date on 1 December 2021 until 15 December 2021.

 

Eligibility to enter Australia as a student:

  • A student visa holder or a Subclass visa holder.
  • Be fully vaccinated with a completed dosage of a vaccine approved or recognized by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) over 7 days. Approved and recognized vaccines are as follow:
    • AstraZeneca
    • Pfizer/Biontech
    • Moderna
    • Sinovac
    • Bharat Covaxin
    • Sinopharm BBIBP-CorV
    • Johnson & Johnson/Janssen
  • Provide proof of vaccination status along with necessary information*
  • Within three days of departure, obtain proof of a negative COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test.

 

After entering Australia Border 

State and Territory Governments are also tightening border and quarantine restrictions in response to the new Omicron variant. The 3 state below require fully vaccinated eligible student visa holders to quarantine for 72 hours upon arrival. They will also need to undertake a COVID-19 PCR test within 24 hours of arrival. Students who have passed the above criteria will be eligible to travel to Australia to these states with.

  • New South Wales (NSW)
  • Victoria (VIC)
  • Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

Noted: While student who wish to enter Victoria state are required to undertake second PCR test between days 5 and 7 after entering Victoria.

 

*Preparing documents for certification of COVID-19 vaccination

Students must prepare the proof of COVID-19 vaccination with formats that meet the following criteria. And presenting the certificates to submit to the inspection officer before traveling on board.

  • Issued by a national or state/provincial-level authority or an accredited vaccination provider
  • Written in English or accompanied by a certified translation
  • Containing at a minimum:
    • name as it appears in the traveller’s passport
    • either date of birth or passport number
    • the vaccine brand name, and
    • the date of each dose or the date on which a full course of immunisation was completed.
