Mercer University

Mercer University was founded in 1833 in Penfield by Georgia Baptists. The school, under the leadership of Baptist minister and spiritual father Adiel Sherwood, was named for Jesse Mercer, a prominent Baptist leader and the first chair of the Mercer Board of Trustees. From its humble beginnings in Penfield, Mercer today is a dynamic and comprehensive center of undergraduate, graduate and professional education. The University has more than 8,700 students; 12 schools and colleges – liberal arts and sciences, law, pharmacy, medicine, health professions, business, engineering, education, theology, music, nursing and professional advancement. Our classrooms collide with the real world through interdisciplinary collaboration and creativity

Mercer’s footprint can be found across the globe. The University is committed to leaving a positive and lasting impact on the world, and it’s eager to provide the tools, support and opportunities to help students, faculty and staff in their quests to make a difference. Students from more than 50 countries are enrolled at Mercer, and they are able to expand their perspectives during study abroad and Mercer on Mission experiences overseas as well as service-learning projects in the local community. Mercer students have dedicated 500,000 hours to service projects and volunteerism in the past year.

The university welcomes students from around the globe to study on our campuses. International students, scholars and their dependents who are studying on F-1 and J-1 visas are supported by the Office of International Programs, which offers programs and services to assist and guide international students, scholars and their dependents throughout their time within the United States at Mercer. The office manages the university’s involvement with the U.S. Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and compliance with immigration regulations.

Mercer’s Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) serves students in Atlanta, Macon, Regional Academic Centers, and in distance as well as alumni for life.  Our consultants provide guidance with application materials such as resumes and cover letters, job search tactics, networking, and more.

Classified nationally as a doctoral research university with high research activity, Mercer attracts about $45 million in annual external funding to fuel discovery and innovation. But beyond the financial support for scientific, engineering and health sciences research, the University relentlessly promotes a culture that encourages the search for new knowledge, finds solutions to real-world problems and stimulates creative activity. From undergraduate research to a variety of research and innovation centers and talent incubators, Mercer daily deploys its intellectual capital to make the world a better place.
