Northwest Missouri State University established in 1905, Northwest Missouri State University is a state-assisted, four-year regional university that also offers graduate degree programs. The business, education, geography and agriculture departments graduate the largest number of students each year. Northwest currently has around 7,000 students. This size of campus offers great opportunities for students to succeed socially, as well as academically. With a student to teacher ratio of 20 to 1, you never feel like a number and receive personalized attention from faculty. With 22-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. Every full-time student receives a laptop computer to use throughout the school year. Laptops and textbooks are included in tuition at Northwest, ensuring all students have access to the tools they need to be successful in the classroom. Northwest launched its textbook rental program in 1922 and the laptop rental program in 2005; the programs save students nearly $7,400 during their four-year academic career.
Northwest is a true advocate of profession-based experience. For instance, in our Horace Mann Lab School students majoring in education get a true inside view of what teaching is all about. Northwest offers several other opportunities for profession-based experiences including internships, the University farm for agriculture majors, on-campus radio and television stations and volunteer work.
90% of first-year students at Northwest rate their experience as “good” or “excellent,” and 87% of seniors said they would choose Northwest again if they could start over their college career, according to findings of 2012 National Survey of Student Engagement. Students have about 1,200 opportunities to build their resumes on campus through student employment.
The School of Communication and Mass Media offers students profession-based experience through two campus radio stations, a campus TV station, a semi-independent broadcast production company, and award-winning student publications including a newspaper, yearbook and online magazine.
The School of Agricultural Sciences offers students hands-on experience at its 448-acre R.T. Wright Farm, which is home to beef, swine, dairy, poultry and sheep herds, as well as row, silage and hay crops. Students also gain experience at the campus orchard, Horticulture Complex, a composting facility and on the campus grounds as the Missouri State Arboretum.
The Horace Mann Laboratory School and the Phyllis and Richard Leet Center for Children and Families provide a clinical experience for pre-service teachers and a diverse and interactive learning environment for children ages three through sixth grade. Northwest Missouri State University, which has served as the state arboretum since 1993, recently was named one of the “50 Most Amazing University Botanical Gardens and Arboretums in the U.S.” by BestCollegesOnline.org. Northwest’s campus, which also serves as a research laboratory for students studying in fields such as agriculture science and natural science, features more than 130 species and more than 1,700 trees. Ten employees in Northwest Facility Services are directly involved in managing and caring for the Missouri Arboretum.
The students will see a refreshed landscape in the areas surrounding the new Robert and Virginia Foster Fitness Center, the Joyce and Harvey White International Plaza, Martindale Hall and the Lamkin Activity Center. The area occupied by the recently demolished grounds and transportation shops is being transformed into a green space that welcomes visitors entering the campus on Ninth Street.
