The University of Utah or UTE was founded in 1850, the University of Utah is one of the best in the nation at creating startup companies based on student and faculty research. This is indicative of the innovative and industrious thinking found across campus and in classrooms. It’s this broad spectrum of diverse academic pursuits that contributes to the intellectual energy experienced on campus. With 17 colleges and schools and nearly 100 departments, one would be hard pressed to find a subject matter not taught at the U – over 72 major subjects at the undergraduate level and more than 90 major fields of study at the graduate level, including law and medicine. It serves over 31,000 students from across the U.S. and the world.

The University shares a long and close relationship with the Ute Indian Tribe, because both the State of Utah, and the land on which the University reside, is the historic homeland of the Utes. The University has proudly used the “Ute” name through the years with the permission of the Tribe, and the Tribe derives significant pride and benefit from the U’s use of its tribal name. Both the U and the Tribe understand the importance of encouraging, inspiring and supporting tribal youth to lead healthy lives and pursue their educations.

The University of Utah uses the name “Utes” for its sports teams, as it has done with full support of the Ute Indian Tribe since 1972. The University, as the flagship of higher education in Utah, takes pride in carrying the name with understanding and respect toward our state’s namesake people. This website was created to encourage the entire U community—students, faculty, staff, fans, alumni, supporters—to learn more about the Ute culture, heritage and the history of our region. Ute history is Utah history so that we can all be “Ute Proud.”

UTE also evoke culture that is the bedrock of Utah’s history and its namesake. Few Utah fans are of Ute descent, yet we align with them each time we use the phrase to display our institutional loyalty. In April 2014, the Ute Indian Tribe recommitted its support for the use of the Ute name. In turn, the U has committed to increase recognition of the rich human history of our state and recognizing the many ways Native American tribes in Utah continue to strengthen our communities.
