Thomas Jefferson University was founded in 1824 as Jefferson Medical College (1824), and Philadelphia University (1884). Both were ahead of their time and focused on the importance of experiential learning. Two Legacies Joined by One Vision. The university’s story includes intrigue, innovation and boldness, with the lead played by Dr. George McClellan. A prominent Philadelphia physician, Dr. McClellan believed in teaching medical students by having them observe experienced doctors treating patients, and by having those same students participate in supervised, hands-on care. His belief was the spur that created Jefferson Medical College and reshaped the way medicine would be taught throughout the U.S.

Location
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (USA)
Philadelphia is one of the most diverse cities in the country, home to a large population of college students, historic attractions like the Liberty Bell and the Constitution Center, a thriving food, music and arts scene, and countless neighborhoods and city suburbs that boast scenic hiking trails and parks.
Our campus locations span the Philadelphia area, from bustling Center City to scenic East Falls, and reach the suburbs of Montgomery, Bucks and Delaware Counties, and New Jersey.
We owe a lot to the Greater Philadelphia Area for its more than 300 years of combined community support of Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University). And, hey, we’ve all got individuals in our lives – teachers, mentors, relatives or friends — who have significantly impacted our lives by giving of their time to support us. There is nothing more rewarding than paying that support forward by giving back to the community and making a real difference in the lives of others.
With two main campuses in Philadelphia, and additional campuses, buildings, research sites and international partner locations, Jefferson has established (and continues to grow) a global ecosystem of transformational education, discovery and impact.
