University of Essex

University of Essex is established since 1964. It is home to the curious, brave and bold. We are a university where curiosity prevails, and where exploring new ways of thinking and pushing the boundaries, isn’t just encouraged – it’s expected.

We’re a university going places with increasing numbers of students and one of the most international academic communities in the world.

Essex’s first Vice-Chancellor Sir Albert Sloman was committed to research and education. “A new kind of university… where students could live and learn… and research really mattered.” Sir Albert aimed for Essex to break the mould and challenge the expectations of what a university should be.

His commitment to these aspects remains at the heart of our mission. We are dedicated to excellence in education and research, for the benefit of individuals and communities. With this, we strive for excellence and we are excelling in everything that we do. We are proud to share that we were named “University of the Year” at the Times Higher Education Awards in November 2018.

Number of total students15, 317 total students and 4,288 international students.

Services and Facilities

The university’s new STEM Centre includes a 180-seat wet lab for the School of Life Sciences and a 150-seat IT-rich exploratory learning space to enable collaboration between students across the Faculty of Science and Health.

The Essex Sport Arena provides a multipurpose space, with facilities ranging from a sports hall the size of three basketball courts, to dedicated laboratories for research and a state of the art Sports Therapy clinic.

The Languages for All programme gives students the chance to learn a modern foreign language at no extra cost for a year, alongside their studiesใ

Student Jobs

The university actively encourages students to develop their skills and experience through part-time work alongside their academic studies.

CareerHub+ is a vacancy service for full-time, part-time, and internship opportunities, both on and off-campus; while Frontrunners is a unique student placement scheme with paid placements on campus, based within academic departments and centres or administrative sections. The flexible hours offer a great way to gain real work-based experience of graduate projects, as well as develop skills through training opportunities.

In addition, the university has a well-developed student ambassador scheme, and the Students’ Union offers a range of part-time job opportunities in roles across the campuses.
