University of Massachusetts Boston or UMass Boston was a movement reacting to social upheaval, urban unrest, and a rapidly increasing demand for higher education. The Massachusetts Legislature established the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1964. UMass Boston — Boston’s only public research university — provides education at a great value, cutting-edge research, and global service.

Part of the UMass system, UMass Boston combines a small-college experience with the vast resources of a major research university. With a 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio, students easily interact with professors because most teaching occurs in small class sizes. Ninety-three percent of full-time faculty hold the highest degree in their fields.

UMass Boston’s 207 undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs, offered through its 10 colleges and graduate schools, serve more than 16,000 students while engaging local and global constituents through academic programs, research centers, and public service. Enriched courses probe more deeply into theory or venture further into application.

UMass Boston’s diverse student body provides a global context for student learning. Its location in a major U.S. city provides connections to employers in industries. Such as finance, health care, technology, service, and education. Offering students opportunities to gain valuable in-school experience via internships, clinicals, and other career-related placements.

UMass Boston’s exceptionally diverse student population is one of its greatest assets. With students from more than 140 different countries, UMass Boston fosters a collaborative, inclusive environment where students from a variety of backgrounds learn to view issues from different perspectives.
